Last week, we discussed prioritising the 16 hours we have each day after the big job ends.
While it won’t all be free time, we have significantly more time than when we were working.
I appreciate many of us still have commitments:
- Elderly parents to care for.
- Big Kids who still need financial, emotional, or practical support.
- Holidays, hobbies, and social engagements.
- Friends to catch up with.
The key message from last week’s blog was this: self-care must be a priority. Ageing is tough on the mind, body, and spirit, but you have more control than you think.
The Hidden Danger of Chronic Stress
Chronic stress, unresolved trauma, or even the inability to forgive someone can wreak havoc on the body. Stress triggers inflammation, and inflammation is at the root of nearly every major age-related disease.
At its core, inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury or infection. It’s meant to be short-lived. But when it lingers, it becomes a silent enemy—one that accelerates ageing and increases your risk of heart disease, dementia, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.
Scientists even have a name for this: Inflammaging—a mix of “inflammation” and “ageing.” It’s persistent, silent, and dangerous.
I’ve Compiled Three Lists.
The first list explains what triggers inflammation, the second outlines the signs that your body is inflamed, and the third provides some solutions to reduce inflammation.
Regarding my Ageing Responsibly message, this could be one of the most important challenges you can tackle.
Three Lists to Help You Tackle Inflammaging
1. Triggers for Inflammation
- Poor diet
- Chronic stress or unresolved trauma
- Lack of sleep
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Toxins or pollution
- Excess alcohol
- Smoking or vaping
- Chronic infections
- Obesity
- The “Over Syndrome”—over-exercising, over-eating, over-planning, over-thinking, over-reacting, over-committing, and overwhelming.
2. Signs Your Body Is Inflamed
- Body aches
- Joint pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Skin Concerns
- Weight gain
- Digestive issues
- Weak immune system
- Poor sleep
- Headaches
- Brain fog
3. Solutions to Reduce Inflammation
- Fix your sleep—Read The Sleep Book and improve your rest.
- Breathe deeply—Activate the vagus nerve to reset your nervous system.
- Move mindfully—Shake, stretch, dance—whatever releases tension.
- Rest intentionally—Rest before you’re exhausted, not after.
- Simplify your schedule—Drop the “fear of missing out” (FOMO).
- Get outside in the morning sunshine—Without a device. Be present.
- Practice gratitude—It rewires your brain for positivity.
- Forgive people—Holding onto anger harms only you.
- Find a calm, quiet, and peaceful place—And go there often.
- Surround yourself with supportive people—They make all the difference.
Each of these could be an entire blog post. But for now, I suggest you work through these lists one step at a time and master your self-care.
