I was walking around the lake near my house. My big job had ended six months ago—not “retired,” mind you. I prefer to say my big job ended because retirement sounds like something you do when you’re ready to withdraw, and I wasn’t.
Still, I felt a bit lost and unfulfilled.
As I walked, I met a bloke, and we got chatting. The conversation turned to retirement, as it often does. His advice, after twenty years of being retired?
“Get up each day, see how you feel, and go from there.”
He seemed content with his approach.
But I needed more.
Yesterday, I was at a get-together with mates my age. Most of them are retired, with a few exceptions. The conversation turned—yet again—to retirement. One of the working lads said something that stuck with me:
“I’ve worked since I was 18 and still working. Retirement is hard; keeping working is the easy option.”
He was right to be concerned about those 16 hours a day we all face when the big job ends.
The Big Question: What Will You Do With 16 Hours a Day?
Another mate, not far from retirement, once told me, “I can’t wait. I’m going to ride my bike every day.”
I pressed him, “Every day? Year after year?”
He paused, laughed, and said, “Yeah, maybe that was a flippant answer. I don’t really know.”
That’s the truth of it, isn’t it? Many of us don’t really know what we’ll do after the big job ends.
What This Blog Is About
Ageing Responsibly is about real stories—wins, losses, and the struggles we face as we navigate this phase of life.
I’ll share my story about the investments I’ve made—not financial ones, but investments in learning and growth. I’ll tell you how I transformed from an ex-golf retailer to something far more fulfilling. I’ll share the times I failed, the light bulb moments, and the decisions that shaped my last 14 years.
The only reason I’m telling my story—and the stories of people I’ve met—is to inspire you to reflect, make brave decisions, and take action.
Because action, especially when it pushes you outside your comfort zone, is where the magic happens.
What You Can Expect
Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll ask you tough questions—questions to make you think, reflect, and act.
We’ll talk about:
- Finding your purpose.
- What we can learn from our elders
- Developing new roles and identities that bring joy and fulfilment.
- Prioritising your health—because if that’s not in order, nothing else will work.
The years after the big job ends should be the best years of your life. You’ve got experience, a few scars, and hopefully, some wisdom.
My Invitation to You
If you allow me, I’ll be your Ageing Responsibly coach or guide. I don’t have all the answers, but I’ve got a ton of stories, 14 years of experience navigating life after the big job, and a few brave decisions that worked out all right in the end.
Together, we’ll explore what’s possible and work toward making these years truly fulfilling.
Let’s get started.
Closing Thoughts
There’s an incredible waste of talent as people age. So many don’t fulfil their potential, but older adults can bring so much to the table. With age comes wisdom, patience, a “no-nonsense” approach, and the ability to see the bigger picture.
Look at the founders of Kentucky Fried Chicken and McDonald’s, —they didn’t let age stop them from making a mark. Older people can make great businesspeople, mentors, or leaders.
Other role models of Ageing Responsibly is Richard Attenborough, Dick van Dyke, Director Clint Eastwood, and Dame Judy Dench all living full purposeful lives. As are many of my clients, who are strong, engaged with life and strong role models for there friends.
Whatever you do, push yourself outside your comfort zone. Whether it’s becoming a more loyal friend, a more present grandparent, or even starting a new venture, the key is to challenge yourself. Build strength—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and embrace resilience as your foundation for the years ahead.
Because ageing responsibly isn’t just about you—it’s about the legacy you leave behind.
